At Oxford Clayhouse, our evening and weekend throwing courses now come with two flexible booking options. You can join us for the full 10-week programme or choose a shorter 6 week block if you prefer a lighter commitment.

BEGINNERS COURSE
This is an introduction to wheel‑throwing for complete beginners or someone looking to refresh their skills. Over six or ten weeks, you’ll build confidence step by step — from centering clay, to throwing cylinders, cups and bowls, trimming, decorating and glazing. With small class sizes and guidance throughout, this course is ideal if you’ve always wanted to try throwing but didn’t know where to begin.
What you'll learn

Getting started -studio safety, learn how to prepare clay by wedging and learn how to centre clay on the wheel

Building your throwing- these sessions are the core of the course – starting with cylinders and moving to cups and bowl- you will begin to improve your skills as the weeks progress.

Glazing pieces ready for the kiln​
IMPROVERS COURSE
For those who have the foundations of throwing and would like to take their throwing to the next level by exploring more advanced techniques. You will learn how to throw with precision and consistency on the wheel.
What you'll learn

Trimming and turning feet

Glazing and preparing work for the kiln
Please note:

15 minutes cleaning up time is included in the lesson time

Short nails preferably for the wheel

Not suitable for women over 3 months pregnant

Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

18+ only

What's included is 6 or 10 pieces or 2 or 3 large pieces anything over that firing is charged at £2.50 per 500g, which usually works out at around £2 per piece, for a cup sized piece.

You will have a wheel to yourself for the duration of the course.
