WHAT THE COURSE COVERS

Across your sessions, you’ll move through the full making process: preparing clay, building forms, letting them dry, glazing and firing. You’ll explore both wheel-throwing and hand-building, giving you a broad foundation before deciding which techniques you enjoy most.

Each week focuses on a different skill, including:

  • Hand-building - pinching, coiling and slab work

  • Wheel-throwing - centering, pulling walls, forming simple shapes

  • Surface decoration - texture, slips, oxides

  • Glazing - understanding materials and finishing your work

We place a strong emphasis on practice time, experimentation, and building confidence. Some students arrive having never touched clay; others return term after term to deepen their skills. Everyone is welcomed at whatever stage they’re at.

Firing

We handle all firing in-house.

  • Bisque firing → first firing

  • Glaze firing → final finish

Whats included is 10 pieces or 3 large pieces anything over that firing is charged at £2.50 per 500g, which usually works out at around £2 per piece, for a cup sized piece.

Who the course is for

  • Complete beginners

  • Returning students

BEGINNERS

If you’re new to clay, each session builds confidence as well as skill. You’ll start with foundational hand-building techniques before moving to the wheel, learning how to centre, pull walls and form simple shapes. You’ll explore surface decoration and finish with a dedicated glazing session, leaving with completed, fired pieces to take home.

IMPROVERS

If you already have some experience, you’ll work more independently - refining your throwing or handbuilding experimenting with form and surface, or tackling more ambitious pieces. Your tutor will support you with troubleshooting, refinement and a gentle push when needed. Many students return term after term to keep a regular practice going.

Please note:

  • 15 minutes cleaning up time is included in the lesson time

  • Short nails preferably for the wheel

  • Not suitable for women over 3 months pregnant

  • Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

  • 18+ only

  • Whats included is 10 pieces or 3 large pieces anything over that firing is charged at £2.50 per 500g, which usually works out at around £2 per piece, for a cup sized piece.
